Today I woke up and headed out to walk the walls that surround the city of Lucca. The walls are 4.2 kilometers (2 ½ miles) long, the second-longest in Europe, just behind Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus. They have eleven bastions and 6 main entrance gates. As they wind around the city, they offer beautiful views of the red rooftops, old palaces, and the Botanical Gardens. The walls were meant to protect the city of Lucca. Now residents use these walls for exercise, to meet neighbors for a chat on the benches, and to have picnics in the parks. They are 30 meters wide (100 feet) and 12 meters (40 feet) high.

Along the way, there are a couple of caffès on the walls where you stop for a coffee, drink or bite to eat. I stopped at one just inside the walls for a tasty pear and chocolate pastry, figuring I’d walk at least half of that weekend treat. 🙂 It took just about an hour to complete the circle, including taking time to stop and look at the views. My next challenge is to bike the walls! This can be a bit intimidating when all the residents are zipping by on their bikes, completely comfortable weaving in and out of the crowds! Ciao for now!
